The global textile industry now produces roughly twice as many garments as it did in the year 2000. That single figure, more than any other, explains what follows.
According to ADEME, France's environment and energy agency, the textile sector accounts for between 4 and 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and closer to 10% under some calculation methods, more than aviation and shipping combined. That range is not a miscalculation. It reflects how hard it is to measure a globalized industry, where the raw material grows in one country, gets spun in another, dyed in a third, before being sewn and shipped. Each step adds its own carbon footprint.
Water tells an equally heavy story. ADEME and the European Environment Agency estimate the textile industry responsible for around 20% of global water pollution, largely tied to dyeing. A single cotton t-shirt takes up to 2,700 litres of water to produce. And once worn, washed, and eventually discarded, a garment keeps polluting: according to a landmark 2017 IUCN report, synthetic textiles (polyester, nylon, acrylic) are the leading source of primary microplastics found in the oceans, accounting for 35% of them. Every machine wash releases hundreds of thousands of invisible plastic microfibres, impossible to filter out completely.
Buying habits make the trajectory worse. In Europe, people now buy 40% more clothing than they did fifteen years ago, and keep each piece half as long. In France alone, 2.6 billion garments are sold every year, 39 per person.
Two responses circulate in the face of these numbers. The first, material recycling, is more limited than it sounds: turning a used textile fibre back into a fibre of equivalent quality remains technically difficult, especially for blended fabrics, and most of what gets collected today ends up as insulation or rags rather than a new garment. The second, upcycling, meaning the transformation of an existing piece into something new without passing through material recycling at all, avoids much of the problem at its source. No new cotton crop. No new dye bath. No new synthetic fibre produced.
At Yayavara Creation, every piece begins as a vintage sari in pure silk, hand-selected by Alice in India, then transformed in Tanu's family atelier in Rajasthan. Nothing is redyed, nothing is respun. The material already exists; it simply changes shape, and life. This is Indian sari upcycling in its most literal sense: revaluing existing material instead of drawing on new resources, reducing waste at the source, and preserving the water that a fresh dye bath or a new cotton harvest would otherwise demand. Set against the scale of the numbers above, it is a modest answer, but one that can be verified, piece by piece.
Since October 1st, 2025, a new textile eco-score has been gradually appearing on garments sold in France, built on the same principle as the Nutri-score for food. Brands built around transforming existing material rather than producing new stock should fare well under it: that is precisely what the label is designed to reward, a revaluing of materials already in circulation rather than a continuous extraction of new ones.
Buy less, but transform what already exists. That is not a slow fashion slogan. It is what the numbers themselves recommend.
